Walking to Shelly Beach from Manly Wharf, I noticed the Urban Water Dragon Research Team chasing down a few water dragons.
The dragons are shy but adapt well to populated suburban areas. They are fast and fairly difficult to capture, even when basking on an open ledge. They don't stray to far away from heavy brush for a quick cover. I also learned they are incredible swimmers and divers, able to submerge for more than an hour at a time, and pack a serious bite when they are pissed.
I was surprised at how many I spotted after speaking with the researchers, although I wasn't able to get a tighter shot of a basking dragon before escaping into the think bush.
